SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is matched up against Leslie County for its home opener in the 2023 high school football season.
The Hornets and Eagles are slated to meet for an early-season matchup on Friday, Sept. 1.
John DeRossett-coached Magoffin County is scheduled to make its home debut against Leslie County after kicking off the 2023 season with back-to-back games on the road at Montgomery County and Lewis County.
The Hornets and Eagles did not meet in 2022.
Magoffin County compiled a 4-7 record in the 2022 high school football season, notching wins over Knott County Central, Bellevue, Floyd Central and Morgan County. The Hornets dropped games to Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Lawrence County, Belfry, Pike County Central, Clay County and Ashland during the 2022 season. Making another postseason appearance, Magoffin County advanced to the 2022 Class 3A Playoffs.
Showing improvement, Leslie County put together a 5-6 record during the 2022 season, posting wins over Floyd Central, Fairview, Morgan County, Knott County Central and Harlan. The Eagles dropped games to Martin County, Clay County, Williamsburg, Middlesboro, Breathitt County and Martin County in 2022. Under the guidance of Coach Eddie Melton, Leslie County advanced to the 2022 Class 2A Playoffs.
Both Magoffin County and Leslie County are poised to welcome back several playmakers and key players for the 2023 high school football season.
Magoffin County’s 2023 schedule includes games versus Leslie County, Montgomery County, Lewis County, Russell, Martin County, Belfry, Powell County, Lawrence County, Estill County and Morgan County.
Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Leslie County football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
