SALYERSVILLE — Among the leaders for Magoffin County throughout the 2023 high school football season, Ian McCarty is looking to compete at the next level.

One of the most underrated high school football players in the state, McCarty wants to be on a college football team’s roster in 2024.

McCarty is projected to deliver and have the largest impact for a college football team as an outside linebacker/strong safety. However, McCarty could produce as a running back in college.

“Ian is a hardworking player,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “He got two to three high qualify weight room workouts in every week during the season. He gained strength, which showed up in his play every Friday night. Ian had multiple 150-yard games and two 200-yard games against quality opponents. Lots of people do not understand the correlation between strength and speed. You could see him break away on runs every game. He probably had five to six runs over 60 yards and multiple runs of 25-plus yards. He worked hard in practice on running back drills and we could see them on film after the games. Ian is a complete player. He blocks, catches the ball, picks up yards after contact, does not fumble and finishes. At 6-foot and 210 pounds, Ian has size and a lot of options at the next level. Young players could use Ian as an example of what hard work in the weight room and on the practice field can do for you. He also has great character and a solid ACT score. If I was coaching football at the next level, Ian McCarty would be at the top of my recruiting board.”

McCarty helped to lead Magoffin County to the 2023 KHSAA Class 3A State Football Playoffs. Following the conclusion of his senior season, McCarty’s college recruitment remains open.
