SALYERSVILLE — Nathan Perkins is set to guide Magoffin County in the 2026 high school football season.
Perkins was named the Hornets’ new head coach on Thursday, May 7. He replaced John DeRossett, whom he coached under. DeRossett retired in early-April.
For the last three seasons, Perkins has been the Hornets’ offensive coordinator. In addition, Perkins has been the Herald Whitaker Middle School head coach for the last two seasons. Perkins guided Herald Whitaker Middle School to multiple championships.
As a player, Perkins played for both Magoffin County High School and the University of Pikeville.
“I am truly honored and excited to take on the role of head football coach for the Magoffin County High School Hornets,” Perkins stated after being hired. “This position means more to me than just a job — it is an incredible opportunity to lead a fantastic program and to be part of a school and community that hold great significance in my life.
“Brittany and I are thrilled about this new season and all that lies ahead. We are committed to building a program that not only develops outstanding athletes but also fosters strong, disciplined, and successful young men both on and off the field.

Magoffin County will open preseason practice in July, following the conclusion of the KHSAA Dead Period.
