Tomcats upend Hornets

SALYERSVILLE — Dealing Magoffin County a setback, Ashland defeated the Hornets 66-52 in a boys’ high school basketball matchup on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Magoffin County lost despite shooting 55.3 percent (21-of-38) from the field. The Hornets made six of 12 three-point field goal attempts, shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc.

Magoffin County shot 100 percent (four-of-four) from the free throw line.

Aden Barnett scored 16 points to lead the Hornets.

Accompanying Barnett in double figures for Magoffin County, Zane Whitaker scored 15 points and Grayson Whitaker netted 12 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Magoffin County, Walker Russell added nine points.

Russell paced Magoffin County inside, securing six rebounds.

Magoffin County suffered its second loss to Ashland in the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season.
