OAKLEY – A Thursday night fire destroyed an Oakley home and injured several of the family members inside, including one juvenile still in ICU.
District 3 Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tanner Stephens told the Salyersville Independent they received a call at 11:30 p.m. March 16 reporting a fire at a mobile home on Oakley.
When crews arrived, the family had already exited the home and were at another location, with Patriot Ambulance Service transporting an adult male to ARH for a reported gash on his leg and possible burns. His 12-year-old son, who had sustained some serious burns, was flown out to Cabell Huntington Hospital, where he remains in ICU at this time. The mother was also at the residence when the fire broke out and is believed to have gone to the hospital, also, but didn’t have any known major injuries.
When fire crews arrived, the mobile home was fully engulfed, with gas and electric still live, preventing District 3 Volunteer Fire Department from being able to fight the fire more aggressively.
Stephens said they contained the fire from spreading to neighboring homes, but the home was a total loss.
American Red Cross has already been in contact with local fire officials to give the family assistance.
District 3 Volunteer Fire Department and Patriot Ambulance Services responded to the fire.
Heather Jordan, the mother of Kayden, the 12-year-old who still remains in ICU, told the Independent on Monday, “Kayden is doing good and his healing is a slow process, but each day is one step forward. We would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers as he is healing and for all of the donations, even the smaller ones. My family is very grateful for all.”
