BOE amends calendar

SALYERSVILLE – Following the Magoffin County School Board’s March meeting, held last Thursday, the school district announced a change in the school calendar to help make up some of the snow days.

On Friday, March 21, Magoffin County Schools released the following announcement regarding the school calendar:

Magoffin County Schools has amended the school calendar to adjust for missed instructional days due to inclement weather. As a result, some days originally designated for spring break will now be regular instructional days.

The following days will now be instructional days:
• Monday, March 31
• Tuesday, April 1
• Wednesday, April 2

Contingent upon the Governor signing HB241, the last day for students will be Wednesday, May 28th, with no changes to the daily schedule. The HWMS Promotion Ceremony is set for Thursday, May 29th, and the MCHS Graduation Ceremony for Friday, May 30th.

We understand that families may have already planned trips during this time. Students who have planned travel that holds significant educational value may submit an Educational Enhancement Opportunity (EHO) Form for approval.

These forms allow students to receive an excused absence for educational activities that provide enrichment aligned with their learning and can be submitted online at https://forms.gle/xtUDs8jFWY53n6UR6

House Bill 241 was officially filed with the Secretary of State on March 25 without the governor’s signature, passing the Senate 31-6 and the House 91-0, which allowed school districts a waiver of up to five student attendance days if a school district is unable to provide the required 1,062 hours of instruction by June 4, but required local boards to try to revise their calendars, either by adding instructional time to student attendance days and/or changing non-instructional days to instructional days.

Previously, the Magoffin school calendar had next week, March 31 through April 4, down as spring break. With the new changes, only Thursday and Friday remain non-instructional days as an abbreviated spring break, with school in session Monday through Wednesday next week.
