Hornets drop five-overtime game to Belfry

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County battled but fell short as longtime 15th Region rival Belfry pulled away to win 88-79 in a five-overtime game on Friday, Feb. 11.

Regulation ended with Magoffin County and Belfry tied 59-59. The Pirates blanked the Hornets 9-0 in a fifth overtime to notch the win.

Visiting Belfry shot 42.7 percent (32-of-75) from the field. The Pirates connected on three of 14 three-point field goal attempts.

Belfry shot 72.4 percent (21-of-29) from the free throw line.
Sal Dean recorded a double-double to lead Belfry to the win, scoring a game-high 45 points and claiming 11 rebounds.

Accompanying Dean in double figures and nearly recording a double-double for the Pirates, DeMahjae Clark scored 23 points and hauled down nine rebounds.

Makaden Maynard added seven points and 11 rebounds for the Pirates.

Chipping in offensively for Belfry, Jonathan Banks added six points, Cross Taylor contributed five points and Caden Woolum posted two points.

Nearly matching Dean’s game-high scoring total, Aden Barnett poured in 43 points to lead the Hornets.

Joining Barnett in double figures for Magoffin County, Zane Whitaker scored 14 points and Ben Lafferty netted 11 points.

Providing Magoffin County’s additional scoring, Grayson Whitaker (six points), Ethan Salyer (three points) and Case Adkins (two points) chipped in offensively for the Hornets.
