HYDEN — Magoffin County averaged nearly nine yards per carry but couldn’t prevail on the road as Leslie County won 45-20 in the Grace Health Veterans Classic Friday, Sept. 6.
With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 1-2.
Leslie County improved to 2-1 after posting the win.
Magoffin County moved the football throughout the matchup.
“The offensive stats would indicate that we won the game going away,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “We averaged 8.8 yards per carry, which is double our goal. Holding calls and two inadvertent whistles cost us around 125 rushing yards. We can’t control those things. Again, our overall team effort was outstanding. We had some defensive issues with the vertical pass. We will continue to work on those in practice.”
Quarterback Landry Collett led Leslie County to the win. Collett completed 17 passes for 295 yards and five touchdowns. Chipping in on the ground, Collett rushed seven times for 57 yards.
Rylan Simpson paced Leslie County in receiving. Simpson hauled in six receptions for 101 yards and one touchdown.
Following Simpson, Caden Shepherd delivered three receptions for 86 yards and one touchdown for the Eagles.
Instrumental in Leslie County’s win, Noah Kilburn added six receptions for 79 yards and three touchdowns.
Leslie County rushed 26 times for 139 yards and one touchdown. Aiding Leslie County on the ground, Tanner Sizemore rushed 10 times for 53 yards and one touchdown.
Magoffin County rushed 30 times for 264 yards. Freshman Blake Wireman paced the Hornets, delivering a receiving touchdown and a rushing touchdown.
Showing his versatility, quarterback Dason Burchett connected with Wireman on a scoring pass and added another rushing touchdown for the Hornets.
Defensively, linebacker Curtis Jenkins paced Magoffin County throughout the game.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Russell for Homecoming on Friday, Sept. 13.
