Lady Hornets edge Wolfe County, 31-30

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County returned to the win column over the weekend, edging visiting Wolfe County 31-30 in a girls’ high school basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Rivals from bordering regions, Magoffin County and Wolfe County swapped leads during the high school hoops matchup.

Starting strong, Magoffin County outscored Wolfe County 11-8 in the first quarter. Magoffin County led 19-13 at halftime but Wolfe County battled back.

Overcoming a six-point halftime deficit, Wolfe County outscored Magoffin County 11-3 in the third quarter to move ahead.

Still, Magoffin County wouldn’t be denied the win. Magoffin County, under the direction of head coach Justin Williams, outscored Wolfe County 9-6 in the fourth quarter to claim the win.

Nearly recording a double-double, Angel Mullis scored 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Magoffin County to the win.

Finishing near double figures for the Lady Hornets, Jaylen McCarty scored eight points.

Abby Barnett (five points), Karah Lafferty (four points), Jaylee Reed (two points) and Kara Risner (two points) combined to account for Magoffin County’s other scoring in the win.

In addition to the scorers, Kennedy Williams and Emily Sluss contributed to Magoffin County’s victory.
