LAURA PRATER RUSSELL has been elected to serve as Circuit Judge of the 30th Judicial District, Family Court, Division 9 in Jefferson County to serve the remaining 6-year term of an unexpired judicial term. Judge Russell beat out two other candidates running in this race to earn this position. Judge Russell previously served as Jefferson County Family Court Judge in 2023 when she was appointed by Governor Andy Beshear. She is a native of Magoffin County, graduated from Magoffin County High School, earned her Bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University, and her law degree from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. She resides in Louisville, Kentucky with her husband, Jason (also a native of Magoffin County) and her teenage daughter, Parker. Judge Russell is the daughter of Teddy and Stella Prater of Salyersville. Judge Russell will be sworn in as Jefferson Family Court Judge on November 25, 2024.
Judge Russell stated in a social media post after the election that she wanted to “thank the voters of Jefferson County for allowing me the privilege of serving as Family Court Judge. Every day, Louisville residents come to Family Court for solutions to some of the most personal and difficult problems they will ever face…I look forward to working every day to use the law to help and serve Jefferson County families.”
