LOUISA — Lawrence County kept Magoffin County from advancing in the 2A, Section 8 Boys’ Basketball Tournament, defeating the Hornets 79-52 on Tuesday, Jan. 6.
The Bulldogs downed the Hornets during the semifinals of the sectional tournament.
Magoffin County started strong, edging Lawrence County 18-16 in the opening quarter.
The Hornets and Bulldogs were 35-35 at halftime. But Lawrence County controlled the second half, outscoring Magoffin County 44-17 to pull away for the win.
Lawrence County shot 39.7 percent (29-of-73) from the field. The Bulldogs made six of 28 three-point field goal attempts.
Lawrence County shot 62.5 percent (15-of-24) from the free throw line.
Hayden Perry led Lawrence County to the win. Perry recorded a double-double for the Bulldogs, scoring 20 points and clearing out 10 rebounds.
Aiding Lawrence County offensively, Kaiden Harris (15 points), CJ Waller (14 points) and Kaden Johnson (11 points) accompanied Perry in double figures in scoring.
A total of 10 different players scored for the Bulldogs. The other scorers for Lawrence County were Isaah Hughes (seven points), Caden Muncy (four points), Andrew Ratcliff (three points), Luke Fetherolf (three points), CJ Whitt (one point) and Grant Cochran (one point).
Magoffin County shot 38.0 percent (19-of-50) from the field. The Hornets connected on six of 22 three-point field goal attempts.
Magoffin County shot 57.1 percent (eight-of-14) from the free throw line.
Maycen Allen paced Magoffin County, scoring a team-high 13 points for the Hornets. Allen made four of five free throw attempts and was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures.
Walker Russell (nine points), Parker Bowling (eight points), Caleb Lovely (five points), Evan Reed (five points), Jackson Gilliland (five points), Hunter Arnett (three points), Dason Burchett (two points) and Michael Trusty (two points) followed Allen in Magoffin County’s scoring column.
Magoffin County exited the 2A, Section 8 Boys’ Basketball Tournament 2-12.
