Hornets notch win over Miners

WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — Magoffin County outlasted Mingo Central (W.Va.) 55-51 during the 24th Annual Hatfield-McCoy Shootout at the Williamson Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 7.

The Hornets improved to 5-17 after notching the win. Magoffin County won for the third time in four games.

The Hornets shot 40.0 percent (20-of-50) from the field. Magoffin County made two of 14 three-point field goal attempts.

The Hornets shot 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

Walker Russell led Magoffin County to the win. Russell poured in a game-high 30 points and cleared out eight rebounds.

Narrowly missing double figures for Magoffin County, Maycen Allen scored nine points while Parker Bowling netted eight points.

Aiding Magoffin County in its win, Jackson Gilliland, Noah Gibson, Dason Burchett and Michael Trusty each added two points.

The Hornets won for the second time in less than 24 hours. Magoffin County pulled away to defeat East Ridge 80-58 in a home game on Friday, Feb. 6.

Mingo Central is the lone out-of-state opponent on Magoffin County’s 2025-26 schedule.

Magoffin County entered the week with regular season games remaining versus Floyd Central, Paintsville, Betsy Layne, Belfry, Phelps, Prestonsburg and West Carter.
