Hornets to visit Morgan County for regular season finale

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to visit Morgan County for a regular season finale on Friday, Oct. 28.

The Hornets and Cougars are longtime rivals and meet on the gridiron annually.

Magoffin County is 3-6. The Hornets have notched wins over Knott County Central, Bellevue and Floyd Central. Magoffin County has dropped games to Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Lawrence County, Belfry, Pike County Central and Clay County.

Head coach John DeRossett guides the Hornets. Magoffin County competes in Class 3A, District 8.

Morgan County is 1-8. The Cougars shut out Jackson County 50-0 for a win earlier in the season. However, Morgan County has dropped games to Lewis County, Betsy Layne, Fairview, Paris, Middlesboro, Leslie County, Knott County Central and Breathitt County.

Head coach Mark Easterling guides the Cougars. Morgan County competes in Class 2A, District 7.

The Hornets held on to defeat the Cougars 28-26 during the 2021 high school football season. Current players Curtis Jenkins, Brayden Standifer and Ian McCarty were the top three tacklers for Magoffin County during the matchup versus Morgan County in 2021.

One week after the regular season finale, both Magoffin County and Morgan County will return to the field for a game in the state playoffs.

Kickoff for the upcoming Magoffin County-Morgan County game is set for 7:30 p.m. in West Liberty.
