Hornets drop regular season finale to Bobcats

STANVILLE — Magoffin County showed improvement but couldn’t return to the win column as Betsy Layne prevailed 75-64 in a boys’ high school basketball regular season finale on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Following the loss, Magoffin County exited the regular season 6-20.

Betsy Layne shot 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the field. The Bobcats shot 37.5 percent (12-of-32) from three-point range.

Betsy Layne shot 71.5 percent (five-of-seven) from the free throw line.

Four Betsy Layne players reached double figures in the scoring column.

Carter Parsons led Betsy Layne to the win, scoring a game-high 21 points for the Bobcats.

Finishing directly behind Parsons in Betsy Layne’s scoring column, Cameron Pente netted 20 points.

Contributing to a balanced offensive attack for Betsy Layne, Isaiah Allen scored 15 points and Ethan Lance netted 10 points.

Finishing in single digits, Braydon Hall (seven points) and Eli Jarrell (two points) supplied the rest of Betsy Layne’s scoring.

Magoffin County shot 56 percent (28-of-50) from the field. The Hornets connected on four of 19 three-pointers.

Magoffin County made four of nine free throw attempts.

Walker Russell paced Magoffin County, scoring a team-high 19 points for the Hornets.

Accompanying Russell inn double figures for Magoffin County, Michael Trusty netted 11 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Magoffin County, Tayte Hall scored nine points.

Magoffin County’s offensive attack was comprised of eight different scorers. Dason Burchett (eight points), Evan Reed (seven points), Parker Bowling (five points), Jackson Gilliland (four points) and Noah Gibson (one point) also produced offensively for the Hornets.

Following the matchup, both Magoffin County and Betsy Layne entered the postseason.
