SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is ranked third in the Preseason Class 3A, District 8 Rankings.
The Hornets opened preseason practice on Monday, July 11, returning to the gridiron following the conclusion of the KHSAA Dead Period.
Magoffin County occupies the number three spot in Preseason Class 3A, District 8 Rankings, which are published in The Cats’ Pause 2022 Kentucky Football Yearbook.
Magoffin County is ranked behind Lawrence County (2) and reigning state champion Belfry (1).
The Hornets are ranked ahead of Pike County Central (4) and Floyd Central (5).
Magoffin County notched Class 3A, District 8 wins over both Pike County Central and Floyd Central during the 2021 high school football season. After suffering a loss to Lawrence County in the opening round of the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs, Magoffin County exited the 2021 season 6-4.
John DeRossett is preparing to guide Magoffin County in his first season as the Hornets’ head coach. DeRossett was introduced as the Hornets’ new head coach in January.
Several experienced players are back on the gridiron for the Hornets.
Magoffin County’s 2022 regular season schedule includes games versus Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Knott County Central, Bellevue, Lawrence County, Belfry, Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County and Morgan County.
The Hornets are slated to open the 2022 high school football season at Breathitt County on Friday, Aug. 19. Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Breathitt County football game is set for 7:30 p.m. in Jackson.
