Hornets to visit Belfry for district opener

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to visit Belfry for its Class 3A, District 8 opener on Friday, Sept. 27.

The Hornets and Pirates are familiar Class 3A, District 8 rivals. Currently, Magoffin County and Belfry meet annually. Belfry pulled away to defeat Magoffin County 42-12 in a Class 3A, District 8 game on Sept. 22, 2023.

Magoffin County is 1-4. The Hornets, under the direction of Coach John DeRossett, notched a shutout win over Lewis County in late-August. However, Magoffin County has dropped games to Montgomery County, Leslie County, Russell and Martin County.

Belfry is 3-2. The Pirates have posted wins over Breathitt County, Southwestern and Pikeville. Both George Rogers Clark and Johnson Central have dealt Belfry losses. Head coach Philip Haywood guides the Pirates. Haywood is the state’s all-time winningest high school football coach.

Magoffin County has regular season games remaining versus Belfry, Powell County, Lawrence County, Estill County and Morgan County.

Belfry has regular season games remaining versus Magoffin County, Lawrence County, Estill County, Powell County and Letcher County Central.

Both Magoffin County and Belfry are at the midway point of the 2024 high school football season.

Belfry is the reigning Class 3A, District 8 champion.

Magoffin County finished third behind Lawrence County and Belfry in Class 3A, District 8 during the 2023 high school football season.

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Belfry game is slated for 7:30 p.m.
