BLOOMINGTON – A Magoffin County man was arrested on an attempted murder charge on Monday.
Magoffin County Sheriff Bill Meade reported in the arrest citation that Garland D. Elsea, 57, of Salyersville, and another person had went to court earlier that day to have a protective order dismissed and have seized firearms returned. Sheriff Meade reported that after court the two went to Elsea’s residence on Bloomington, but their conversation turned hostile.
According to the citation, Elsea allegedly took the other person by the throat and hit the person. As two other people entered the bedroom, Elsea allegedly entered the master bedroom closet, grabbed a handgun and fired it.
Sheriff Meade told Mortimer Media Group the gun jammed on the second shot.
They all hit the ground and one of the other people there held Elsea down until police arrived, according to the arrest citation.
Elsea was taken into custody without further incident and he was transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where he remains at press time and charged with attempted murder, second-degree strangulation and first-degree wanton endangerment – discharge of firearm.
