Meadows hired as new superintendent

SALYERSVILLE – The Magoffin County School Board hired a new superintendent in last Thursday’s regular meeting.

In the December 16 meeting, the school board unanimously agreed to hire Chris Meadows, at an annual salary of $120,000 for the next 3 ½ years.

The school board also approved to authorize Board Chairman Rodney Ward to sign the contract to hire Meadows once is drawn up by Board Attorney Don McFarland.

Ward stated during the meeting, “The board is very privileged and honored to have Mr. Meadows as our next superintendent of Magoffin County Schools. I know for myself, me and him went to school together, we taught together for several years, and I have the utmost confidence in him to do the right thing and do the best for our district and have the best interest of our kids in mind. I’ll sleep good at night knowing he’s the next superintendent of Magoffin County School District and I think the board as a whole has that feeling. I think we’ve all went to school with Mr. Meadows and I think this board has the utmost confidence in him to carry out the job as the next superintendent of Magoffin County Schools and to lead us forward in the direction we want to go in regards to test scores, in regard to academics, and athletics. We’re very honored and very proud to have you. Thank you for stepping up and accepting this role for us.”

Meadows thanked the Ward and said, “I just want to thank the board members for your vote of confidence in me tonight and I just want to pledge to each of you, to our students in the district, our parents we have, and the entire community that I will work diligently. I will dedicate to the time it takes to get the work done and will do my best to always put the students first and to always try to carry out to the best of my ability the goals of the board of education. Thank you for your vote tonight in me, the confidence that you’ve had, and I appreciate it very much.”

Scott Helton, who had held the position of superintendent of Magoffin County Schools for the past 5 ½ years and worked for the district for a total of 33 ½ years, announced his retirement in October, effective November 1. In the meantime, the board appointed Chris Meadows as interim superintendent. Meadows, who had previously been the principal of Magoffin County High School, has worked at the district office since early this year.
