Recanvass held: Results unchanged in magistrate race

SALYERSVILLE – The Democratic Magoffin County District 3 magistrate race was recanvassed on Thursday, with results remaining unchanged from election night returns.

The Magoffin County State Board of Elections met on Thursday, May 26, with the total votes from each precinct, including the absentee machine and paper, are read aloud, again, and re-tallied.

As is normal in very close races, Magistrate District 3 Joe Bailey (D) had requested the recanvass after losing for reelection to Sam Bailey Jr. by only nine votes on election night. Those results were verified with the recanvass last week, with the totals remaining 352 for Sam Bailey Jr., 343 for Joe Bailey and 94 for Charles Brown.

Bailey will go up against Ronnie Lovely (R), who won the Republican Magistrate District 3 race on May 17.

In other election news, the candidate filing deadline for the General Election to be held this fall is Tuesday, June 7, which will include non-partisan city races, etc.

The SI will start running the readers’ poll, again, after next week’s filing deadline, as well as the full candidate list.
