Teacher under investigation for ‘inappropriate communication’ with a student

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County Schools Superintendent Chris Meadows released the following statement on Wednesday, May 3, regarding a teacher and student reportedly having “inappropriate communication.”

“We have been informed and have investigated a situation that occurred Tuesday, May 2, 2023, which involved inappropriate communication between a middle school teacher and a high school student,” Superintendent Meadows released in his public statement on Wednesday. “School personnel immediately turned this matter over to the Kentucky State Police and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services for investigation and initiation of any criminal prosecution. The teacher in question is no longer employed by Magoffin County Schools. We take the safety of our children seriously and want their parents and families to know that their safety, education, and best-interests are always our priority.”

When asked if he could confirm that there are two other ongoing investigations that the district has turned over to Kentucky State Police involving alleged inappropriate contact or misconduct between two former high school teachers and students unrelated to this case and to each other, Meadows said, “Yes, the Kentucky State Police tells us they have an ongoing and open case involving a former high school teacher suspended without pay in February 2022 and another case that resulted in a high school teacher suspended without pay earlier this year, pending the investigation.”

Meadows said the district is still waiting to hear back from Kentucky State Police on those two cases.

At press time, neither of the three teachers have been formally charged and Kentucky State Police has not responded to the Independent’s questions regarding the three cases.
