Caregiver charged in credit card fraud case

SALYERSVILLE – A Johnson County woman is facing charges after allegedly taking the credit card of someone she was caretaking and spending nearly $800 without consent to use the card.

According to the arrest warrant, Rebecca Miles, 49, of Oil Springs, was in a caretaking role for the victim, and reportedly exploited the trust she had built up in that role to deprive the person of a credit card to purchase items from several stores in different counties.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Tracy Salyer received a list of transactions that showed the offender used the card at Walgreens ($427.69) and The Market (formerly IGA) ($370.53) in Salyersville, with the amount spent at the two stores totaling $798.22.

According to the warrant, Miles can be seen on security recordings at Walgreens.

The victim told police Miles did not have consent to use the credit card.

Miles was arrested on July 7 in Paintsville and taken to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where she was released the next day on a $1,000 surety bond.

Miles is currently charged with knowingly/wanton/reckless exploitation of adult by a person, $300 or less (a Class A misdemeanor), and fraudulent use of a credit card, $500<$1,000 (Class A misdemeanor). She is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on July 28.

Editor’s Note: The indictment or charge of a person by a grand jury or otherwise is an accusation only and that person is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
