MASH FORK – A man is behind bars after a police standoff ended peacefully Monday night.
Magoffin County Sheriff Bill Meade told Mortimer Media Group they received a call at 40 Donnie Lane, on Mash Fork in Salyersville, concerning a man that had reportedly entered a home, brandished a firearm and threatened to kill the person who own the residence and to kill himself.
Sheriff Meade said the person who had called in the incident to 911 told them the man had entered one of the bedrooms and barricaded himself in there with a firearm.
The man reportedly knew the homeowner, but he had forced his way into the house and took the homeowner’s gun when he threatened to kill her and himself, according to law enforcement.
The homeowner left the residence, went to another location, and called police, according to Sheriff Meade.
“When we entered the house, we positioned ourselves behind cover and we began trying to have a conversation with the individual, who was identified as Jamie Arnett,” Sheriff Meade said. “Our attempts to have a conversation with him was very limited. He didn’t want to speak and he was making comments about harming himself. I contacted Magoffin 911 and asked them to contact the Kentucky State Police and ask that they send some units to our location. I wanted to make for sure that we could secure the perimeter of the house so he couldn’t exit.”
The sheriff said that after troopers with KSP Post 9 arrived, they agreed that calling in the Kentucky State Police Special Response Team was the best option to have a peaceful or successful conclusion to the situation. He says that upon the Special Response Team’s arrival, they were able to complete their task, and shortly after midnight on Monday night they took Jamie Arnett, 50, of Salyersville, into custody peacefully.
“Thankfully, no one was injured,” Sheriff Meade said. “We were able to successfully apprehend Mr. Arnett. He exited the residence and we were able to arrest him without incident. Mr. Arnett was charged with burglary and there will be additional charges, as well. He was transported to the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center, where he is currently being housed.”
At press time, Jamie L. Arnett, 50 of Salyersville, is charged with one count of first-degree burglary.
The standoff lasted roughly eight hours, from the time he barricaded himself in the house and when he surrendered to police
