Hunt sentenced to 10 years

SALYERSVILLE – A Salyersville man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for incest (victim under 18) and sexual abuse charges.

Dwayne Hunt, 59, of Salyersville, appeared in court on January 13, 2026, withdrawing his not guilty plea and entering a plea of guilty via a plea agreement between himself, represented by Neil Borders, and the Commonwealth, represented by Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Cameron Adams.

Hunt appeared in court, again, on March 19, for sentencing. Hunt confirmed for the court that the contents of his Pre-sentence Investigation, prepared by the Division of Probation and Parole, were factual.

Magoffin County Circuit Judge Kimberley Childers, having given due consideration of the PSI report and the nature and circumstances of the crime, as well as the history, character and condition of Hunt, found that there was a likelihood during a period of probation or conditional discharge that he will commit another crime and that he needs correctional treatment that can be provided most effectively at a correctional institution. Judge Childers also noted in her judgment that probation or a conditional discharge would unduly depreciate the seriousness of Hunt’s crime. Childers found him guilty of incest-person less than 18 by person 3+ years older (Class B felony); and sexual abuse, first degree (Class D felony).

For the incest charge, Hunt was sentenced to 10 years in prison, and 2 years for the sexual abuse charge, with the sentencings to run concurrently. His other three charges were dismissed with prejudice. Hunt must register as a lifetime sex offender and complete the Sex Offender Treatment Program (must enter and complete while incarcerated). He is to have no contact with the victim, and must pay court costs of $130 within 6 months of his release from prison.

Hunt has been held at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center since his original arrest on April 10, 2025.

According to the original arrest citation, Kentucky State Police Post 9 Trooper Layne was dispatched on March 31, 2025, concerning an alleged rape that had reportedly occurred four years ago when the victim was 13 years old. After police conducted interviews and an investigation, they had Dwayne Curtis Hunt, then 58, of Salyersville, come to Post 9 in Pikeville for an interview on April 10.

During the interview, Hunt was asked about the allegations made against him regarding sexual intercourse with the minor in 2021, but he denied the allegations, according to the police report. Hunt then went on to reportedly contradict himself, admitting to varying degrees of sexual abuse on at least three different occasions.
