Dancing for Shelter

From Floyd County Homeless Shelter

Eleven dancers, including your very own District Judge Dennis Prater, are scheduled to take the floor and compete for the Crystal Ball. Last year Judge Prater won second place at Dancing for Shelter 2023.

Dancing for Shelter is a fundraiser for the Floyd County Homeless Shelter, now known as Maddiwar House of Hope. The local Homeless Shelter has been supported by contributions from the local community for the last five years. Floyd County Homeless Shelter Board of Directors has twenty-two members that are all volunteers.

The Shelter is proud to announce that the individual Board Members are working hard. We want to let the public know the excitement we have for this years event. The present Board Member’s of the Floyd County Homeless Shelter are: President, Gerald DeRossett; Vice President, Tim Hatfield; Treasurer, Robin Slone; Secretary, Jeania Perry; Lynn Case; Reva Trusty; Judi Calhoun; Renee Thornsberry; Sherry Sellards Cline; John Rosenberg; Dr. Mina Gopal Majmundar; Dr. Terry Hall; Jonathan Koonce; Jamie Conley; Surekha Gangadhar Maddiwar; Melissa Childers; Martha Ellis; John Hunt; Amanda Hall; Denise King; Dalton Hatfield; Susan Kendrick; Crystal Allen; Tina Mills; Board Attorney, Earl M. McGuire.

Numerous sponsors have participated to support this event, which goes to the future operation of the Homeless Shelter. In the last five years the Homeless Shelter has served over two hundred homeless individuals, with results that over seventy-five are now un-homeless. They have found employment, permanent housing, they have had their medical problems resolved and they are independent.

President, Gerald DeRossett, would like to invite you to be part of an incredible night of dancing to benefit the Floyd County Homeless Shelter. We hope you will join us for an exciting evening filled with twists, twirls, and intrigue—all for a good cause. The event features local civic, business and community leaders showcasing their best dance moves to put on an amazing show for a great cause. The evening will consist of local stars from throughout Eastern Kentucky paired with dancing instructors to compete for awards, all while raising money through your votes. In just one captivating night of fun and performances, Floyd County Homeless Shelter, Inc. will raise funds and awareness to help the homeless in and around our community!
This year the MC’s will be Former WYMT Newsman and Attorney Tanner Hesterberg and Prestonsburg Tourism Director, Lauren McCoart.

Board Director, Jeania Perry, is excited to announce these expected dancers to compete for the Crystal Ball are: Retired Doctor, Dentist and County Judge, Doc Marshall; Floyd County Assistant Attorney, Meka Castle; Materials Manager of Highlands ARH, Chris Ferguson; Panache Owner, Ashleigh Dotson; Prestonsburg City Council Member, Heather Ousley; Attorney, Mickey McGuire; Magoffin District Judge, Dennis Prater; Chairman of Floyd County Republican Party, Amber Burchett; Public Health Director for Floyd County, Martha Ellis; Assistant Principal at Prestonsburg Elementary School and Owner of The Scoop, Kaleb Rodebaugh; Doctor at Highlands Hospital, Jack Kendrick; Dancer for University of Pikeville, Mattie Crum; Dancer/Performer, Elizabeth Green; Community Trust Bank Advisor, Rob Shepherd; Southern Prep Owner, Corey Copley; Pikeville College Assistant Dance Coach, Brookyln Newsome; Christian Appalachian Project, Nicholas Hites; Highlands Director of Nursing, Susan Kendrick; Highlands ARH ER Doctor, Dr. Nick Chaffin; Owner of ProFitness, Nikki Fields; Mayor Rick Hughes; City Counsel Woman, Brittany Branham.

The event is run much like the “Dancing with the Stars” show and there will be judges that will give each couple a score after they complete their routine, between one and ten. This year, we are excited to have back our Head Judge, Dance Etc. Owner, Jody Shepherd, and have invited Judges, Andy and Nikki Blakemore and Bluegrass Ballroom Dance Studio Operator Dancer, Abby Roach.
