OLIVE HILL — John Fultz returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown to lift Magoffin County over West Carter 20-14 in a non-district game on Friday, Sept 11.
The win allowed Magoffin County to even its overall record to 2-2.
Following the loss, West Carter dropped to 1-3.
Magoffin County rushed 26 times for 170 yards and one touchdown. Running back Blake Wireman paced Magoffin County on the ground, rushing 15 times for 86 yards. Quarterback Cole Howard reached the endzone via the ground in Magoffin County’s win, rushing six times for 53 yards and one touchdown.
Another Magoffin County running back, James Fultz, rushed three times for 29 yards.
Howard paced Magoffin County through the air, completing seven passes for 59 yards and one touchdown.
Bryce Buckallew was on the receiving end of Howard’s scoring pass, hauling in a 48-yard touchdown reception.
John Fultz led Magoffin County defensively, returning the interception for a touchdown and recording a game-high 13 tackles.
Following John Fultz in the key defensive category, Isaac Yates and Caleb Lovely tallied 10 tackles apiece.
Several players produced defensively for the Hornets. Aiding Magoffin County defensively, Jairen Howard provided nine tackles while James Fultz, Mason Peck and Andrew Hall each added eight tackles.
West Carter rushed for nearly 300 yards. The Comets took 48 carries for 298 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Nathaniel Hale led West Carter, rushing 17 times for 115 yards and one touchdown. Following the game’s leading rusher, West Carter quarterback Westin Kiser rushed 11 times for 76 yards and one touchdown.
Limited through the air, West Carter picked up only four passing yards via one completion.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Winfield (W.Va.) for its next game in the 2026 high school football season on Friday, Sept. 18.
