SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County couldn’t battle back from behind as visiting Winfield (W.Va.) won 42-12 on Friday, Sept. 18.
The Hornets and Generals met for the second straight season.
Magoffin County slipped to 2-3 after absorbing the loss.
With the win, its first in the 2026 high school football season, Winfield improved to 1-2.
Magoffin County rushed 27 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Blake Wireman accounted for most of Magoffin County’s rushing yardage. Wireman led Magoffin County, rushing 18 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Cole Howard paced Magoffin County through the air. Howard completed seven passes for 83 yards.
Wireman, Mason Peck, Jairen Howard and Isaac Yates each contributed as receivers for the Hornets.
Defensively for Magoffin County, John Fultz recorded a game-high 14 tackles.
Ranking second in the key defensive category for Magoffin County, Yates and Aden Montgomery recorded eight tackles apiece.
Magoffin County is scheduled to host longtime rival Estill County for its Class 3A, District 8 opener on Friday, Sept. 25.
