MAGOFFIN – Magoffin County was spared in the weekend flooding, compared to surrounding counties.
Magoffin County Schools only called off school on Monday for flooding, but was able to return to classes on Tuesday. With Wednesday and Thursday called off for snow, the district has missed 25 days so far this year, with the last day of school right now at June 5.
On the local level, the Magoffin County Judge/Executive’s office has received no reports of flood damage in people’s homes, but Judge Matt Wireman said he knows of damages to ductwork, etc., but people are encouraged to report damages to homes or county roads by calling 606-349-2313. As always, take plenty of pictures, make a list and keep receipts from any work you have to have done as a result of the flooding.
Salyersville Independent owner and publisher Ritt Mortimer monitored the rain event over the weekend at the Independent/Your News Today office, with downtown Salyersville receiving 2.67” of rain by the end of the event.
He said the highest amount in Eastern Kentucky was around 4” and lowest in 2.16”, putting Magoffin on the lower end of that. Another inch of rain in Magoffin County would have been much more catastrophic, but no serious injuries or damages were reported here.
Just as the waters receded, the county had to brace for more snow, yet, again, with three inches of snow dumped on Magoffin by Wednesday morning and three more in the forecast. A cold weather advisory is set through Thursday morning, with cold chills near zero degrees expected.
