SALYERSVILLE – With two weeks left until school begins, the Magoffin County Schools District is preparing for the new year.

In the Tuesday, July 23 Magoffin County School Board meeting, Superintendent Chris Meadows told the board that the first day of school for students is August 8, and the elementary schools have been holding “kindercamps” to help the incoming kindergarteners to be ready for the school year. He said they have announced to the community that the school board will be funding school supplies for all students this year, again. Back to school nights are coming up, as well.

Meadows said teachers will be brought in next week for trainings, with two of the bigger trainings they have investing in this year focusing on leadership, engagement and team building strategies for students, to help encourage students at all levels to empower the students and give them reasons to want to be in class.

Superintendent Meadows also announced they have been approved for the Apprenticeship Building America Grant Program, which covers the cost of hiring a career support specialist for a 195-day contract position. He explained this would be made available through the federal grant for four years, which would fully pay the salary of the teacher to monitor the students in career/tech pathways to have apprenticeship opportunities.

This grant pays the salary of the teacher and will pay the students in apprenticeship opportunities. The apprenticeships can be within the school system or in businesses outside of the school system.

The board approved to create the certified position of career support specialist and the SI will follow up with the superintendent when the program is up and running.

Mortimer Media Group was told by school officials that Magoffin County is one of only four school districts in the state that were awarded under the Apprenticeship Building America Grant Program.
