Barnett, Lafferty combine to lead Hornets in opener

BUCKLEYS CREEK – Sophomores Aden Barnett and Ben Lafferty combined for 32 points and 21 rebounds in Magoffin County’s heartbreaking 55-54 loss to host Pike County Central in a season opener on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Barnett recorded a double-double, delivering 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Lafferty, a transfer from Johnson Central, followed with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Hornets.

Magoffin County shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field. The Hornets were 1-of-15 from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from the free throw line in the loss.

Patrick Damron netted nine points for Magoffin County while Isaiah Salyer added six points in the Hornets’ short effort.

Rounding out Magoffin County’s individual scoring, Grayson Whitaker and Ethan Prewitt chipped in five points and two points, respectively.

Pike County Central shot 44.2 percent (19-of-43) from the field. The Hawks were 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from 3-point range.

Pike County Central shot 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the free throw line.

Jaylan Rigdon, who delivered the game-winning shot, scored 20 points to lead Pike County Central to the win.

Magoffin County and Pike County Central aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2020-21 boys’ high school basketball season.
