Hornets beat Belfry, 49-42

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County turned back visiting Belfry in a boys’ high school basketball game on Monday, Jan. 9, winning 49-42.

The Hornets overcame shooting 34.1 percent (14-of-21) from the field to claim the win.

Magoffin County connected on four of 16 three-point field goal attempts.

The Hornets shot 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the free throw line.

Magoffin County outrebounded Belfry 32-27 as part of its winning effort.

Grayson Whitaker scored 18 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Whitaker hit three of seven three-point field goal attempts.

Delivering a double-double for the Hornets, Zane Whitaker scored 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Aiding the Hornets offensively, Aden Barnett (seven points), Ethan Salyer (six points), Walker Russell (three points) and Ben Lafferty (three points) supplied the rest of Magoffin County’s scoring.

Belfry shot 40.9 percent (18-of-44) from the field in the matchup. The Pirates finished one-for-nine from three-point range.

Belfry shot 50 percent (five-of-10) from the free throw line.

Jonathan Banks recorded a game-high double-double to lead the Pirates, scoring 19 points and claiming 15 rebounds.

Accompanying Banks in double figures in scoring for Belfry, Cody Erwin netted 10 points.

The other scorers for Belfry were Eric Daniels (four points), Caden Woolum (four points), Noah Brown (three points) and Kaleb Hensley (two points).
