BUCKLEY CREEK — Visiting Magoffin County came up short as Pike County Central held on to win 13-12 in a Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 14.
Following the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in Class 3A, District 8.
Pike County Central improved to 3-5 overall and 2-1 in Class 3A, District 8 after claiming the win.
Facing adversity, Magoffin County was without starting quarterback/defensive back Aden Barnett. The Hornets’ leading rusher and passer, Barnett, who is one of the state’s top athletes, was sidelined during Magoffin County’s game versus Floyd Central eight days earlier.
Magoffin County was near the goal line but held out of the endzone in the final possession of the Class 3A. District 8 game versus Pike County Central.
Pike County Central scored first and never trailed. However, Magoffin County pushed Pike County Central throughout the district game.
Pike County Central led 7-0 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Magoffin County answered in the second quarter, but its two-point conversion attempt failed.
The Hawks clung to a 7-6 lead over the Hornets at halftime.
Extending its lead, Pike County Central returned to the endzone in the third quarter to move ahead 12-6.
Countering, Magoffin County reached the endzone again in the fourth quarter. Looking to take the lead, Magoffin County was held out of the endzone on its second two-point conversion attempt.
Pike County Central rushed 42 times for 218 yards and two touchdowns.
Matt Anderson led the Hawks, rushing 29 times for 172 yards and one touchdown. Behind Anderson in Pike County Central’s offensive attack, Daymon Scammell rushed seven times for 29 yards.
Leading Magoffin County in the district game, Brock Montgomery rushed for two touchdowns.
Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Clay County for a non-district game on Friday, Oct. 21.
