Hornets come up short at Pike County Central

BUCKLEYS CREEK – Visiting Magoffin County fell short as Pike County Central connected on a buzzer beater to win 55-54 in a boys’ high school basketball season opener on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

BUCKLEYS CREEK – Visiting Magoffin County fell short as Pike County Central connected on a buzzer beater to win 55-54 in a boys’ high school basketball season opener on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

The Hawks and Hornets swapped leads throughout the season opener.

Magoffin County led 16-13 at the conclusion of the opening quarter.

However, Pike County Central battled back to lead 23-21 at halftime.

Pike County Central stretched its lead shortly after the break. The Hawks led 40-30 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

But Magoffin County battled back.

The Hornets pushed Pike County Central in the game’s final quarter before falling short via the buzzer-beater.

Individual statistics for Magoffin County were unavailable at press time.

Pike County Central shot 44.2 percent (19-of-43) from the field. The Hawks were 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from 3-point range.

Pike County Central shot 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the free throw line.

Jaylan Rigdon, who delivered the game-winning shot, scored 20 points to lead Pike County Central to the victory.

Following Rigdon, Josh Du Toit scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Hawks.

Magoffin County was visiting 16th Region member West Carter on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Results from the Magoffin County-West Carter boys’ basketball game were unavailable at press time.
