PINEVILLE — After winning three of its last four regular season games, much-improved Magoffin County competed in the KHSAA Class 3A State Football Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 3.

Dealing Magoffin County a season-ending loss, Bell County pulled away to defeat the Hornets 62-27 in the opening round of the KHSAA Class 3A State Football Playoffs.

However, visiting Magoffin County challenged Bell County throughout the postseason matchup.

Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett was quick to compliment his team following the season-ending loss.

“This is the best practice team that I have coached,” said DeRossett. “We have made great strides in our program in a year and a half. We played hard against Bell County and moved the ball up and down the field. We had the next guy up at several offensive line positions and they played physical. We had a couple of tough calls on touchdowns, or we would have been over 40 points on offense. For the second week in a row, Russell Cruz ran a kickoff back for a touchdown. We had guys out in front making great blocks. This team has been awesome to coach and the seniors will be missed. Football creates relationships for life. Now, we will rest up for a couple of days and then get back into the weight room and start preparing for 2024.”

A team on the rise, Magoffin County ended the regular season with back-to-back wins. Following the loss to Bell County, Magoffin County exited the 2023 high school football season 4-7.
