Hornets defeat Jaguars 61-47

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County pulled away to defeat Floyd Central 61-47 in a non-district game on Monday, Jan. 22.

Returning to the win column after suffering a one-point loss to Pike County Central on Friday, Jan. 12, Magoffin County improved to 9-8.

Floyd Central dropped to 7-10 after suffering the loss.

Taking control early, Magoffin County doubled up Floyd Central 18-9 in the opening quarter.

Magoffin County led 34-25 at halftime and maintained an advantage throughout the second half.

The Hornets led 51-33 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Aden Barnett poured in a game-high 28 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Barnett, who was honored as Magoffin County’s all-time leading scorer, excelled throughout the non-district matchup.

Accompanying Barnett in double figures for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker scored 12 points and Walker Russell netted 10 points.

Aiding Magoffin County in its win. Zane Whitaker added eight points and Ethan Salyer chipped in two points.

Ronnie Samons scored 13 points to pace visiting Floyd Central. Finishing directly behind Samons in Floyd Central’s scoring column, Chris Spriggs netted 12 points.

Eight different players scored for Floyd Central, which was limited offensively. The other scorers for Floyd Central were Dawson Moore (five points), Logan Meade (five points), Brody Buck (four points), Wesley Buck (three points), Dylan Boyd (two points) and James Samons (two points).

Magoffin County and Floyd Central aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season.
