SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County suffered a setback as visiting Paintsville pulled away to win 71-56 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
The Hornets slipped into the loss column after recording back-to-back wins.
The trio of Colby Fugate, Connor Fugate and Braxton Tharp combined to lead Paintsville to the district win.
Magoffin County shot 32.1 percent (17-of-53) from the field in the loss. The Hornets connected on six of 21 attempts from three-point range.
Magoffin County shot 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the free throw line.
Aden Barnett scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Hornets. Barnett shot 80 percent (eight-of-10) from the free throw line.
Recording a double-double for the Hornets, Zane Whitaker scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
Chipping in offensively for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker (seven points), Ethan Salyer (five points), Case Adkins (two points), Walker Russell (two points) and Ben Lafferty (one point) provided the Hornets’ additional scoring.
Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Paintsville for another 57th District boys’ basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
