Hornets fall to Leslie County in home opener

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County was held out of the endzone as visiting Leslie County pulled away to win 37-0 in a high school football game on Friday, Sept. 1.

The Hornets hosted the Eagles for a home opener.

Following the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 0-3.

Leslie County improved to 2-1 after registering the win.

The Eagles used a balanced offensive attack to claim the win.

Leslie County rushed 26 times for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

Dalton Maggard led Leslie County on the ground, rushing 14 times for 110 yards and one touchdown.

Aiding Leslie County on the ground, Landry Collett and Bryce Pugh added one rushing touchdown apiece.

Following Maggard in rushing for the Eagles, Caden Caldwell took two carries for 38 yards.

Collett paced Leslie County through the air, completing 13 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

Rylan Simpson led Leslie County’s group of receivers, hauling in five receptions for 74 yards and one touchdown.

Ranking second in receiving for the Eagles, Isaiah Vanscoy hauled in three receptions for 53 yards.

Dalton Baker and Charles Hoskins each finished with 43 receiving yards for the Eagles.

In addition to picking up 40-plus yards, Hoskins delivered one touchdown pass reception.

Bryce Pugh led Leslie County’s defensive unit, recording a game-high 13 tackles.

Providing a lift for Leslie County in the secondary, Jayden Hacker delivered three interceptions while Tanner Estep picked off one pass.

Despite suffering the shutout loss, Magoffin County managed to gain over 200 yards.

Quarterback Dason Burchett led the Hornets, completing 17 of 25 passes for 142 yards.

Russell Cruz paced the Hornets in receiving. Cruz hauled in 10 receptions for 96 yards.

The Hornets rushed 11 times for 67 yards in the setback.

Defensively for Magoffin County, Garrett Jenkins and Brayden Standifer each recorded six tackles.

Ian McCarty contributed five tackles for Magoffin County while Bryce Standifer and Braxton Montgomery added four tackles apiece.

Both Curtis Jenkins and Garrett Jenkins recovered a fumble for the Hornets. Curtis Jenkins posted three tackles and blocked an extra-point kick.

Standifer, McCarty and Curtis Jenkins each recorded one tackle for a loss during Magoffin County’s home opener.

Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Russell on Friday, Sept. 8.
