Hornets knock off Rowan County in 2A Sectional Semifinals

MOREHEAD – Returning to the win column, Magoffin County pulled away to defeat Rowan County 62-48 in the 2A, Section 8 Boys’ Basketball Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday, Jan. 5.

Following the win, Magoffin County advanced to the 2A, Section 8 boys’ basketball title game.

Aden Barnett recorded a triple-double for Magoffin County, scoring 12 points, dishing out 11 rebounds and hauling in 10 rebounds.

Leading the Hornets’ scoring attack, Zane Whitaker netted a game-high 23 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Grayson Whitaker finished as the Hornets’ second-leading scorer, tossing in 16 points.

Rounding out Magoffin County’s individual scoring, Ben Lafferty and Walker Russell contributed eight points and three points, respectively.

Former 16th Region frontrunner Rowan County shot 41.9 percent (18-of-43) from the field. The Vikings shot 33.3 percent (seven-of-21) from three-point range.

Weston Maxey scored 15 points to lead Rowan County. Accompanying Maxey in double figures for the Vikings, Colby Wilburn and Chase Alderman netted 12 points apiece.

Contributing offensively for Rowan County, Braiden Hammonds and Christian Parker added six points and three points, respectively.

The Hornets are Vikings aren’t scheduled to meet again in the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season.
