Hornets make strides, compile 16-11 record

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County exited the 2022-23 boys’ high school basketball season five games above .500 after making strides during its latest campaign.

The Hornets compiled a 16-11 record in the 2022-23 boys’ high school basketball season.

Under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, Magoffin County showed improvement throughout its 2022-23 season, which ended following a loss to rival Paintsville in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

The Hornets put together a 12-16 record in the 2021-22 season, which included losses in five of their last six games.

Magoffin County claimed the 2A, Section 8 boys’ basketball championship during the 2022-23 season. After winning the sectional title, Magoffin County competed in the 2A State Tournament in Owensboro.

Junior guard Aden Barnett led Magoffin County throughout the 2022-23 season, averaging over 21 points and nearly seven rebounds per game. Barnett, who is among the state’s top high school student-athletes, paced the Hornets in both scoring and rebounding.

In addition to Barnett’s leading effort, Ben Lafferty, Zane Whitaker and Grayson Whitaker each averaged over 11 points per game for the Hornets.

Ethan Salyer, Walker Russell, Brennan Hansen, Reed Meadows, Noah Sammons and Colin Litteral were other key contributors for Magoffin County in the 2022-23 season.

Magoffin County entered the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament as the number one seed. Paintsville, playing on its home gym floor, managed to knock off Magoffin County 63-60 in the semifinals of the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

Magoffin County will return four of its five starters for the 2023-23 boys’ high school basketball season. Lafferty is the only Magoffin County starter that will be lost via graduation. Magoffin County will be one of the most experienced boys’ high school basketball teams in the 15th Region when the 2023-24 season arrives.

Following a break, Magoffin County will return to the court later in the offseason.
