Hornets move to 4-3

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County took a 4-3 record into the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season’s Christmas break.

The Hornets, under the direction of head coach Scott Castle, defeated visiting West Carter, an opponent from the nearby 16th Region, 72-65 on Tuesday, Dec. 21.

In addition to West Carter, Magoffin County has notched wins over Pike County Central, Morgan County and Letcher County Central.

The Hornets have dropped games to Floyd Central, 57th District rival Martin County and Lawrence County.

Through seven games, Aden Barnett and Ben Lafferty are combining to average over 40 points per game for the Hornets.

Over the past two weeks, Magoffin County has shown improvement.

Several players are contributing for Magoffin County in the 2021-22 boys’ high school basketball season.

Along with its top two scorers, Magoffin County features Zane Whitaker, Grayson Whitaker and Ethan Salyer.

A longtime member of the 57th District, Magoffin County is slated to face Corbin in the opening round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

The Hornets are scheduled to return home to host rival Paintsville for a 57th District game on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022.

    That’s Reed Meadows in the picture, not Kaden. Kaden is out with a leg injury.
