Hornets open preseason practice

SALYERSVILLE — Football is back in Magoffin County.

Returning to the gridiron, Magoffin County opened preseason practice on Wednesday, July 12.

The Hornets returned to the field following the conclusion of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Dead Period.

Magoffin County was active throughout the offseason, conducting workouts to prepare for the upcoming high school football campaign.

John DeRossett is headed into his second season as Magoffin County head coach. The Hornets compiled a 4-7 record in the 2022 high school football season, notching wins over Knott County Central, Bellevue, Floyd Central and Morgan County. Magoffin County dropped games to Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Lawrence County, Belfry, Pike County Central, Clay County and Ashland during the 2022 high school football season.

Several experienced players are among the student-athletes back on the field for Magoffin County.

The Hornets compete in Class 3A, District 8. In addition to Magoffin County, Class 3A, District 8 includes Belfry, Estill County, Lawrence County and Powell County.

Magoffin County’s 2023 schedule is comprised of games versus Montgomery County, Lewis County, Leslie County, Russell, Martin County, Belfry, Powell County, Lawrence County, Estill County and Morgan County. The Hornets are due to host five home games during the 2023 high school football season.

Magoffin County is slated to visit Montgomery County (Class 5A, District 7) for a season opener in Mount Sterling on Saturday, Aug. 19. Former Magoffin County standout Michael Caba guides Montgomery County as its head coach.

Montgomery County exited the 2022 high school football season 3-8.

The Hornets are Indians are due to meet in the Recreation Bowl. Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Montgomery County football game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
