Hornets to host Lawrence County for district opener

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to host Lawrence County for its Class 3A, District 8 opener on Friday, Sept. 16.

A team which benefitted from a strong offseason strength and conditioning program, Magoffin County will enter the district matchup on a two-game winning streak.

The Hornets are 2-2 after recording back-to-back wins over Knott County Central and Bellevue. Magoffin County has shown much improvement after opening the 2022 high school football season 0-2 following losses to Breathitt County and Prestonsburg.

John DeRossett is in his first season as the Hornets’ head coach.
“We got back to work at the start of the week preparing for our first district game against Lawrence County at home,” said DeRossett. “We are progressing every day. There will be mistakes, but that is life. We look at the film and make corrections. This is a fun bunch to be around. The community has been great, and our pep section is fire on Friday nights. We have an awesome facility and the crowds have been great. We just need to keep focusing on the fundamentals of football, lifting weights, stay healthy, and give great effort in practices and games.”

The Bulldogs are 2-1. Lawrence County has claimed wins over Harrison County and Russell. In between its two wins, Lawrence County dropped a game to Greenup County.

Taking a break following its season opener versus Harrison County, Lawrence County was idle the week of Friday, Aug. 26.
Head coach Alan Short guides the Bulldogs.

The Hornets dropped a pair of games to Lawrence County in 2021, falling to the Bulldogs during the regular season and the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs.

Magoffin County has regular season games remaining versus Lawrence County, Belfry, Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County and Morgan County. The Hornets’ last four games in the regular season will be played on the road. Magoffin County is slated to visit rival Morgan County for a regular season finale on Friday, Oct. 28.

Kickoff for the upcoming Magoffin County-Lawrence County football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
