Hornets to host Paintsville, Breathitt County for first scrimmage

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is scheduled to host Breathitt County and Paintsville for its first scrimmage in the 2023 high school football preseason on Saturday, Aug. 5.

Much-improved Magoffin County has made progress throughout the offseason and is expected to carry momentum into its season opener at Montgomery County on Saturday, Aug. 19. The Hornets and Indians are slated to meet in the tradition-rich Recreation Bowl.

Magoffin County and Breathitt County met for a season opener in 2022. The Bobcats managed to notch a shutout win over the Hornets in the 2022 season opener.

Longtime rivals in several sports, Magoffin County and Paintsville did not meet during the 2022 high school football season.

In addition, Breathitt County and Paintsville did not meet in 2022.

Following an appearance in the Class 3A Playoffs, Magoffin County exited the 2022 high school football season 4-7. Head coach John DeRossett guides the Hornets.

After reaching the third round of the Class 2A Playoffs, Breathitt County concluded the 2022 high school football season 9-3. Head coach Kyle Moore guides the Bobcats.

Finishing at .500, Paintsville, after reaching the third round of the Class 1A Playoffs, compiled a 6-6 record in the 2022 high school football season. Head coach Trevor Hoskins guides the Tigers.

High school football teams will start preseason practice in July. Season openers are scheduled for the week of Friday, Aug. 18.

The schedule and format for Magoffin County’s first scrimmage will be released at a later time.
