Hornets to host Paintsville for first scrimmage

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to host Paintsville for its first scrimmage in the 2023 high school football preseason on Saturday, Aug. 5.

The Magoffin County-Paintsville scrimmage is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

John DeRossett is preparing to guide Magoffin County in his second season as the Hornets’ head coach. Magoffin County compiled a 4-7 record during the 2022 high school football season, making an appearance in the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs.

Following a loss in the second round of the Class 1A Playoffs, Paintsville exited the 2022 high school football season 6-6. Head coach Trevor Hoskins guides the Tigers.

The upcoming scrimmage will offer playing time for all of the Hornets.

“We are going to get everyone on the field and get some film to teach from,” said DeRossett. “We kinda know where we are right now, but with some 11-on-11 play, you get to see a little more about a player. This is just practice to us. We don’t have a lot of full contact in practice, so this will be good for us. I just want to see our players play hard, be physical, give great effort and finish. Mistakes will happen. We try to teach our guys to have a short memory and play the next play. Basically, just fly around and have fun. If people aren’t busy on Saturday, we’d like to invite them to come up to Magoffin Mountain and take in some football. We have the best concession stand in America!”

Magoffin County will take the field for its season opener later in the month.

The Hornets are scheduled to visit Montgomery County for the Recreation Bowl on Saturday, Aug. 19.
