Hornets to meet Harlan County in Black & Blue Bowl

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is scheduled to meet Harlan County in the Black & Blue Bowl at Shelby Valley High School on Saturday, Aug. 13.

The Hornets will meet the Black Bears in a preseason finale. Magoffin County and Harlan County did not meet during the 2021 high school football season.

Magoffin County competes in Class 3A, District 8, along with Belfry, Floyd Central, Lawrence County and Pike County Central.

Harlan County competes in Class 4A, District 8, along with Clay County, Johnson Central, Letcher County Central and Perry County Central.

Magoffin County, following a loss to Lawrence County in the opening round of the Class 3A State Playoffs, exited the 2021 high school football season 6-4. The Hornets notched wins over Prestonsburg, Knott County Central, Bellevue, Floyd Central, Pike County Central and Morgan County in 2021. Magoffin County dropped games to Lawrence County, Belfry and Clay County during the 2021 high school football season. Lawrence County defeated the Hornets in both the regular season and during the playoffs in 2021.

Head coach John DeRossett is set to guide Magoffin County on the gridiron in his first season as the Hornets’ head coach.

Harlan County, a former district title contender, compiled a 2-8 record in 2021 and missed out on reaching the postseason. The Black Bears notched wins over South Laurel and Pike County Central during the 2021 high school football season. Harlan County dropped games to Hazard, Whitley County, Knox Central, Clay County, Letcher County Central, Johnson Central, Perry County Central and Bell County in 2021.

Class 3A, District 8 member Magoffin County hosted Shelby Valley for its first scrimmage in the 2022 high school football preseason on Saturday, Aug. 6.

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Harlan County football game is set for 6 p.m. on Shelby Valley’s newly turfed field.

Rivals Pikeville and Shelby Valley will meet in a matchup following the Magoffin County-Harlan County game.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children.

A carnival will be held from 3 p.m.-6 p.m.

A grill will open at 4 p.m.

A concession stand will be open throughout the Black & Blue Bowl.
