SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County shut out visiting Knott County Central 39-0 to win the Founders Day Bowl on Friday, Sept. 2.
After notching the win, Magoffin County improved to 1-2.
Knott County Central dropped to 1-1 following the shutout loss.
Aden Barnett and Ben Lafferty each delivered two rushing touchdowns for the Hornets.
Providing a score from the defensive side, Barnett returned an interception for a touchdown.
Adding another touchdown for the Hornets, Brock Montgomery hauled in a 73-yard scoring catch.
In addition to making an impact offensively and defensively, Lafferty kicked extra-point kicks for the Hornets.
John DeRossett notched his first win as the Hornets’ head coach.
“We are making steady progress every day,” commented DeRossett. “We got to play a JV game at Pikeville on Monday (Aug. 29) and that was quality work for us. We are starting five to six freshmen and sophomores on Friday nights and as many as 10 to 12 are seeing action. We came out ready to play in all three phases of the game. We have been working on kicking extra-point kicks, so we won’t be chasing points. That is getting better. Our coaches are doing an outstanding job leading this team. We are in the fourth week of the season and time waits for no one. We got back to the fundamentals of blocking, tackling, ball security and team concepts at the start of the week. We’ve got some really outstanding young men representing Magoffin County with their best efforts. Who knows, by playoffs we might be a tough out. The great thing is that every player got in the varsity game against Knott County Central. I am blessed to get to go coach football every day. The community support has been great. We’ve had some big crowds and our parents and boosters work hard to make sure our players have the things they need to successful.”
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Bellevue for its next game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9.
