JACKSON — Claiming its second straight win, Magoffin County defeated Jackson City 45-24 in the Kentucky Prep Showcase on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Magoffin County outrebounded Jackson City 52-41 in its winning effort.
Karah Lafferty scored 11 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Lafferty was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in scoring.
As part of a balanced offensive effort, Magoffin County received scoring from nine different players. The additional scorers for Magoffin County were Emily Sluss (seven points), Macy Williams (seven points), Angel Mullis (six points), Bella Trusty (five points), Abby Barnett (three points), Jaylee Reed (two points), Abigail Bradley (two points) and Maddie Salyer (two points).
Barnett paced Magoffin County inside, claiming 10 rebounds.
Five different Magoffin County players grabbed five or more rebounds in the win.
Defensively, Magoffin County limited Jackson City to eight field goals. Jackson City made four three-point field goals in the matchup.
Tara Strong scored a game-high 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers.
Accounting for Jackson City’s additional scoring, Emily Patrick and Adeline Turner added three points apiece.
Sharing game-high honors with Strong, Turner added 13 rebounds of her own.
The Kentucky Prep Showcase featured high school basketball teams from multiple regions.
Rivals from bordering regions, Magoffin County and Jackson City met for the first time in the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season.
Prevailing for the third time in four games, Magoffin County improved to 6-18 after notching the win.
