INEZ – Martin County jumped out in front early and never faltered on its way to defeating visiting Magoffin County 64-31 in a 57th District girls’ basketball game on Monday, Jan. 25.
With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the 57th District.
Martin County improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the district with the win.
A contender for the 15th Region title, Martin County forced the Lady Hornets to play from behind throughout the district matchup. Martin County led 29-12 at halftime and finished strong, outscoring the Lady Hornets 21-9 in the fourth quarter.
Laken Williams paced Martin County with a game-high 17 points. Finishing directly behind Williams in scoring for the Lady Cardinals, Lakyn Porter netted 16 points.
Exiting the district game near double figures, Katie Marcum and Lynndsey Cassell chipped in eight points apiece for the Lady Cardinals.
The additional scorers for Martin County were Alyssa Allen (seven points), Tessa Thompson (three points), Jaaliyah Williams (two points) and Chloe May (one point).
Haley Barnett paced Magoffin County with 16 points. Joining Barnett in double figures and registering a double-double, Angel Mullis added 11 points and 14 rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
Magoffin County featured five scorers, including Jaylen McCarty (five points), Karah Lafferty (one point) and Kennedy Williams (one point).
The Lady Hornets were scheduled to visit Fairview at press time on Wednesday Jan. 27.
