Voting
Polls will be open on Tuesday, May 19 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Election Day, but Early Voting with no excuse required begins today, Thursday, May 14, and runs through Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16, at the Magoffin County Clerk’s Office in the Magoffin County Court House Albert Patrick Building, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The most important thing to remember is to bring your ID. Magoffin County Clerk Renee Shepherd said voters will be required to bring a valid ID to vote.

Polling locations for Election Day are printed on page A1 of this issue of the SI, and you can check your voter registration information (where to vote, party registered under, etc.) at GoVoteKY.org.

Also, remember that you can only vote within your registered party or in nonpartisan races during a primary.

On the Ballot
United States Senator
First on the ballot is the United States Senator race, with many candidates vying for longtime Senator Mitch McConnell’s seat as he opted to not run for reelection this year. On the Republican ticket, you’ll have a choice between Daniel Cameron, Jonathan M. Holliday, Andy Barr, Nate Morris, Valerie “Dr. Val” Fredrick, A. Nick Shelley, James D. Duncan, Michael James Faris, Anissa Catlett, Other Donald Wenzel, Jimm I. Leon and George Washington. On the Democrat ballot, there are Vincent Anthony Thompson, Amy McGrath, Dale Lewis Romans, Charles Booker, Pamela Stevenson, Joshua Blanton Sr. and Logan Forsythe. The winner of each race will go head-to-head in the General Election this November for the seat.

U.S. Representative in Congress
For U.S. Representative in Congress, 5th Congressional District, there are only Republican candidates, so this race will be decided on Tuesday, with incumbent and longtime Representative Hal Rogers fighting to retain his seat, up against Kevin Smith, Benjamin Hurley, Jerry Lee Shelton and Brandon R. Monhollen.

Similarly, the Kentucky State Senator 30th Senatorial District will also be decided in the Republican Primary with Incumbent Senator Brandon Smith and current State Representative Bill Wesley fighting for the seat.

County Judge/Executive
The Magoffin County Judge/Executive race will only be on the Republican ticket, with Tommy Howard going up against former Judge/Exec. Charles “Doc” Hardin, who switched his party from Democrat to Republican prior to filing as a candidate this time. The winner of this race will go up against Democrat and former Judge/Executive Matthew Chalmer Wireman, who resigned at the end of last year to be able to retain survivor benefits for his family.

County Clerk
Here’s where it may get confusing. On the Republican ballot, it’s going to show Justin Williams against Isaac S. Minix, but Justin Williams pulled out of the race after the ballots were already set, so votes for him will not be counted. By default, Isaac Minix will go up against incumbent Magoffin County Court Clerk Renee Shepherd (D) this fall. Since she’s running unopposed on the Democrat ticket, you will not see Shepherd’s name on the ballot and both move on to the General Election.

Sheriff
For the top law enforcement position in the county, we have a pretty packed race on both sides. On the Republican ballot you will find incumbent Magoffin County Sheriff William “Bill” Meade, Jonathan “Pippy” Holbrook, Hames Harless, Christopher Todd Minix and Rodney Patrick. On the Democrat Ballot, there will be Dakota Murphy, Dewey Marshall and former Sheriff Randall “Bob” Jordan.

Jailer
Incumbent Magoffin County Jailer Bryan Montgomery (D) will go up against Teddy Jenkins in the Democrat Primary this Tuesday, with the winner moving on to run against Robbie Russell (R), who is unopposed for the Primary, this fall.

Coroner
Like the county clerk’s race, this one will be on the Republican Primary ballot, but votes will not be counted in this one. Candidate Timmy Salyer withdrew from the race after the ballots were already set, so Johnnie Lovely (R) will be going up against incumbent Coroner Mark Jenkins (D).

Magistrate District 1
This race will be decided on Tuesday, with Republicans Stanley Hensley and incumbent Magistrate Darrel Ray Howard vying for the District 1 seat on the fiscal court. With no Democrat candidates, the winner of the Primary wins the race.

Magistrate District 2
Incumbent Magistrate Eddie Jenkins (R) is running unopposed in the Primary, and in November will go up against the winner from the Democrat Primary, with Josh Watson and William “Paul B.” Howard running for that spot.

Magistrate District 3
On the Republican ballot, you’ll have a choice between candidates Jeremy Handshoe, Tim Conley, Franklin Ray Bailey and Clayton D. Howard. On the Democrat ballot, you’ll have to choose between Paul Bailey and Joe Bailey, though current Magistrate Sam Bailey Jr. will still appear on the ballot, though he also withdrew from the race and votes for him will not be counted.

Constable District 3
On the Republican ticket, there will be Danny C. McCarty, Gabrial “Gabe” Brown and Dwayne Risner; and on the Democrat ticket there will be Richard Rex Love vs. Mitchell Bailey.

Races Moving on to the General Election
As stated previously, for county clerk, Incumbent Renee Shepherd (D) will go up against Isaac Minix (R) this fall, and for coroner, Incumbent Mark Jenkins and Johnnie Lovely (R) are vying for that position.

Constable District 1 will be James E. Rudd (R) vs. Eric Trusty (D) and Constable District 2 will be Wade Collinsworth (R) vs. Jeff Perkins (D).

Other Races on the Ballot this Fall
Yes, you may have seen some candidates filing for city council or mayor, but those nonpartisan races won’t happen until the November election.

Right now, current Mayor Stanley Howard and former Mayor James “Pete” Shepherd have filed for mayor. So far, the following have filed or city council, with six seats available: Colin Ray Jackson, David Gardner, Brandy Lain and Phyllis Howard.

Soil and water conservation will also be on the ballot this fall, with four seats available, and so far, Dwayne Skaggs and Avavan Arnett Deaton have filed.

School board races will also be up for election in November, but no candidates have filed at this time.

Candidates have until June 2 to file for the nonpartisan races that will be held in the General Election.

Already Decided Races
As they have ran completely unopposed, the following have already won their reelections: PVA Rebecca Allen (R), County Attorney Travis Joseph (D), County Surveyor Kerry K. Howard (D), State Representative John Blanton (R), and District Judge Dennis B. Prater (nonpartisan).
