Magoffin County introduces three new head coaches

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County has introduced three new head coaches for the 2026-27 schoolyear.

All three of the new head coaches are Magoffin County graduates.

Nathan Perkins has been named Magoffin County football head coach. Perkins replaced former head coach John DeRossett, who announced his retirement in early-April. For the last three seasons, Perkins has been the Hornets’ offensive coordinator. In addition, Perkins has been the Herald Whitaker Middle School head coach for the last two seasons.

Isaiah Salyer has been named the Magoffin County boys’ basketball head coach. Salyer was the interim head coach for the Hornets late in the 2025-26 boys’ high school basketball season. Prior to that, Salyer was an assistant coach for the Hornets. Salyer was a student assistant for the University of Pikeville men’s basketball program for four years. His stint at the University of Pikeville included some time as the head coach of the Bears’ junior varsity men’s basketball team.

Gerald Howard has been named the new head coach of the Magoffin County girls’ basketball program. Howard is one of the most experienced basketball coaches in the 15th Region. During his coaching career, Howard has been an assistant coach for both the Magoffin County girls’ and boys’ basketball programs, enjoying success in various roles. Howard has additional experience as a head coach for each of the Herald Whitaker Middle School basketball programs.

Sammi Sites was the interim head coach for Magoffin County late in the 2025-26 girls’ high school basketball season.
