Lady Hornets drop opener to Martin County

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County fell behind early and couldn’t overcome its slow start as visiting Martin County pulled away to win 63-34 in a 57th District girls’ basketball game on Monday, Jan. 4.

Longtime 57th District rivals, Magoffin County and Martin County met for a season opener.

Magoffin County was forced to play from behind throughout the district matchup.

Lynndsey Cassell scored a game-high 20 points to lead Martin County to the victory.

Martin County featured three scorers in double figures. Accompanying Cassell in double figures in scoring for Martin County, Laken Williams netted 11 points while Katie Marcum contributed 10 points.

Jaaliyah Warren (eight points), Alyssa Allen (five points), Lakyn Porter (five points) and Graci Snyder (four points) combined to round out Martin County’s individual scoring.

Magoffin County shot 37 percent (10-of-27) from the field in the setback.

The Lady Hornets were 5-of-11 (45.5 percent) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 45 percent (9-of-20) from the free throw line.

Stephanie Helton paced Magoffin County, scoring a team-high 14 points for the Lady Hornets. Helton was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in the scoring column.

Angel Mullis (seven points), Karah Lafferty (six points), Jaylen McCarty (three points), Kennedy Williams (three points) and Charla Lykins (one point) were the additional scorers for Magoffin County in the season opener.

Mullis led Magoffin County inside, pulling down 16 rebounds.

Magoffin County is slated to visit Martin County on Monday, Jan. 25.
